Turn heart data into a clinically useful question.
Smartwatches and fitness devices can capture valuable information, but alerts and graphs are not diagnoses. A cardiology review can help decide what is meaningful, what needs confirmation and what can safely be left alone.
Useful signals, interpreted in context.
Patients increasingly arrive with single-lead ECGs, irregular-rhythm notifications, high or low heart-rate alerts, exercise data, recovery trends and sleep or oxygen information. These may help capture a transient event that would otherwise be missed.
They can also generate uncertainty. Motion artefact, poor skin contact, algorithm limitations and normal physiological variation may all create unusual-looking results. The safest interpretation combines the raw trace, the circumstances in which it was recorded, your symptoms, medication, fitness and medical history.
- Apple Watch, Fitbit, Garmin, Samsung and other available ECG traces
- Kardia or other single-lead ECG recordings
- Heart-rate trends during rest, sleep and exercise
- Irregular-rhythm or atrial-fibrillation notifications

Where possible, export the ECG PDF or original recording. A screenshot stating “atrial fibrillation” contains less information than the rhythm strip used to generate it.

Palpitations
A recording taken during symptoms can help identify whether the sensation corresponds to an arrhythmia or ectopic beats.
Exercise
Heart-rate patterns can be reviewed alongside exercise intensity, symptoms, medication and personal fitness rather than against a single generic threshold.
Prevention
Wearables may support behaviour change and activity tracking, but cardiovascular risk still requires conventional clinical information such as blood pressure, cholesterol and family history.

Can a smartwatch diagnose atrial fibrillation?
A good-quality trace may strongly suggest atrial fibrillation, but notifications and automated classifications should be reviewed clinically and may need confirmation.

Bring a concise selection of representative traces and a short symptom timeline. The aim is to answer the clinical question, not to inspect every data point.
Should I stop exercising after a high heart-rate alert?
That depends on the number, symptoms and context. Seek urgent help for severe chest pain, severe breathlessness or collapse. Otherwise, arrange clinical advice rather than relying on the watch alone.
